(Los Angeles, CA) Thursday, February 8, 2024 – The GRAMMY® Award-winning Los Angeles Master Chorale, the country’s preeminent professional choir, will honor GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, at GALA 2024, on Monday, April 29, 2024 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Master Chorale’s most important and exciting fundraising event of the year, GALA 2024 will transform Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall into a sparkling supper club and celebrate the bohemian glamour of contemporary Los Angeles.

The program will open with the Master Chorale’s legendary Surround Sing, with voices enveloping the audience in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall, an experience that Alex Ross, writing in The New Yorker, recently described as “shiver-inducing.” Honoree Rufus Wainwright will deliver an intimate performance in-the-round from the piano, culminating in an exclusive preview performance with the Master Chorale of a movement from his new Dream Requiem, co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Master Chorale and making the US premiere in its 2024-25 season.

Praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Wainwright has released 11 studio albums. The most recent, GRAMMY® Award-nominated Folkocracy, is a celebration of Wainwright’s folk music roots with artists such as Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile, and John Legend.

Dream Requiem, based on Lord Byron’s poem “Darkness” and the Requiem Mass, reflects Rufus Wainwright’s enduring fascination with the Requiem form. Wainwright describes the work as “the amalgam of two musical and creative ideas, which had been developing side by side for a long time, and which were brought together during the singular dramatic experience of the Covid-19 pandemic that brought the world to a standstill.” Over the course of his career, Wainwright has not hesitated to incorporate musical elements of opera into his pop music and has written two operas, Prima Donna and Hadrian.

Dream Requiem is co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Palau de la Musica Barcelona, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, RTE Orchestra Dublin, Royal Ballet London, and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.

Table sponsors will be invited to attend the Master Chorale’s private GALA 2024 Sponsor Soirée, an exclusive cocktail party with Rufus Wainwright, to kick off the spring gala season on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

The GALA 2024 auction will feature one-of-a-kind experiences, including tickets to the world premiere of Dream Requiem at the Auditorium de Radio France in Paris on June 14, 2024.

All proceeds from GALA 2024 will benefit the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s world-class performances and transformational education programs.

Generous support for GALA 2024 is provided by Platinum Table Sponsors Kiki Ramos Gindler and David Gindler. The Event Sponsor is AmaWaterways, the Official River Cruise Line of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

The Gala Host Committee is led by Chair Melissa Romain and members Chip W. Baik, Jennifer Diener, Kiki Ramos Gindler, Martha Groves, Jenny S. Kim, Ron Myrick, Lisa Richardson, Maredith Palmer Torres, and Tracy Van Fleet.
