Des Prezes

Sorry, Josquin — we just had to, as it’s Presidents’ Day weekend! While this holiday isn’t loaded with laughs so much as patriotism, playing hooky and some really terrific music, I hope you all enjoy it and offer a toast to at least two of our former leaders. (I’ve often wondered how they’d feel about sharing a birthday… let’s say they’re fine with it.)

As for music this week, it’s clear that the romance portion of Valentine’s Day spirit is far from over:

  • You can still catch the lead-up to Figaro’s nuptials at LA Opera, and can even learn more about this Mozart classic through an online Zoom session;
  • Long Beach Opera is taking an ancient story and making it real for us moderners with the world premiere of Kate Soper’s Romance of the Rose, which gets only 3 performances between now and 2/25;
  • The opera-to-film premiere of Poulenc’s La voix humaine comes to Laemmle Theaters in North Hollywood on Thursday. You can see the flick from Angels Vocal Art for just $15, but you might want to spring for the VIP package so you can go to the party. This film screens for one night only!

…and a little time off

I will actually be spending some time with family and will be addressing only urgent List-related needs through Monday, so Listers, email or text me if you’re in the soup. Otherwise, we’ll have more for you all next week!

Happy Presidents’ Day!
