Loving the mashup

There’s so much creativity and exuberance happening in the arts as we find our way back into live performance again. This weekend’s opening of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion from LA Opera is an outrageously marvelous example, mixing oratorio, opera, ballet and more to help us think of one of history’s most spectacular sacred masterworks in a brand-new way.

There’s also Conference of the Birds from Resonance Collective, coming to A Noise Within on March 28. It combines old texts, a mythic journey and new music, and you should definitely check it out.

Those are just two examples of the kind of creative presenting we love to see, but sometimes it’s good to dive into the familiar, too: Tesserae’s Rome-inspired program on Sunday is such a chance, with a fantastic lineup of performers.

To sum up, things are looking good. There’s a lot more to come, so stay tuned.
