Classical music is built on dichotomy: it’s “serious” music, and we tend to take our work pretty seriously. After all, we pour our hearts and souls into what we do, and are heavily invested in the results. While it’s an awful lotta fun, it’s easy to get lost in the sense of purpose.
As we head into the holidays, with the crazy schedules and constant grind, resist the stress and instead, be on the lookout for fun in every shape and color. Go caroling with your family, just because. Watch something ridiculous. Bake something. Drink something fun (alcohol optional, whipped cream up to you). Wear your silliest something under your choir robes. Do anything to remind yourself how important the fun parts are. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it must make you, and perhaps someone else, grin and laugh and find joy in the moment.
