Opera al fresco

Saturday evening is a great time to help a friend or loved one dip into opera, without the fussiness of a big hall. LA OPERA is again hosting simulcast events of their season’s first production, and this one is a whopper: the new staging of La Bohème is getting raves, causing buzz, and challenging how hard-core Puccini buffs imagine the story. The wacky costumes alone are shaking things up. You can get a glimpse of what the beleaguered company has been up to by attending one of two casual yet massive gatherings: One at the Santa Monica Pier, and one at Columbia Regional Park in Torrance. Both events are on the Lister Calendar — take your “click” 😉 and get there early!

That must’ve been one very big van

The nearly legendary SUNDAYS LIVE series is moving to St. James Episcopal Church in Hancock Park/Koreatown as of this weekend, as LACMA is working on some home improvement for awhile. AKA “St. James in the City”, this gorgeous gothic church is already home to some of the best liturgical music in town, with their Great Music series continuing around the Sundays Live programming while their guests are in tow. The first concert is all instrumental, but well worth attending, even for vocal junkies. As usual, the concerts will also be live streamed on the Sundays Live website. Not your mama’s gala

Our third wish looks ahead to next week, but I want to give you a chance to grab your seats and plan: This year, LONG BEACH OPERA is remaking the annual fundraising event by mixing it up and spreading out the activities throughout the year. The first of these very un-stuffy “UnGalas” is Sunday, October 6, and kicks things off with a “Divalicious Drag-Off“, with opera singers and drag queens singing their hearts out at Hamburger Mary‘s in Long Beach. If any event can change a skeptic’s impression of opera, this is it! Join the fun
Thank you all for your patience during my hiatus from CCMN. We’ve been working on “the List” and growing new programs and services that will help a lot of artists & orgs, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with the SoCal community very soon. Stay tuned, keep showing up, and we’ll see you here next week!

REMINDER: You should know that the Lauri’s List calendar is now “self-serve”, which means it’s up to presenters and performers to make sure their vocal events are on our calendar. But don’t worry, it’s easy!: Just go to laurislist.com/calendar and click the “Submit event” button at the top. Basic listings are still free, and we’d love to have your vocal-inclusive, classical-leaning doings in the mix.
