Review in a hurry: ‘Thumbprint’ at LA Opera

We recently got some feedback about LAO’s unusual opera, Thumbprint by Kamala Sankaram, who also stars in the show.  The mini-rave comes from Joanna Cazden, a longtime Lister.  The groundbreaking Off Grand production is playing through this weekend, and we just had to share:

Lauri & all:

FYI –
I saw “Thumbprint” tonight at Redcat & TOTALLY recommend it.  It’s a profound (true) feminist story from Pakistan, written entirely by women & performed with exquisite balance of Western & South Asian styles/tonalities. Beautifully staged & sung, just a top-notch & groundbreaking work in every dimension.
Hope some other Listers will have the chance to go.
cheers –
Joanna
Thanks, Joanna, for the feedback.  This timely opera is making quite an impact, and we’re happy to help spread the word.  Mark Swed, writing for the Los Angeles Times, liked it, too:
“A vibrant call for women’s rights… You don’t leave the theater unimpressed or unmoved.”
– Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times
