Pre-Easter… maybe “Preaster”? (Maybe not, but the music’s good.)

Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Happy spring!

The biggest thing keeping singers busy right now, of course, are the upcoming Passion Week and Easter festivities, and the many and various sacred services that can involve. Easter Sunday is just ten days away, and there is absolutely glorious music all over the Southland.

So this week, we’re encouraging you to “think hyperlocal”: check out the groups and the churches near you and choose a few events that will shower you with beautiful, inspiring tunes. Find a new musical hangout. See what musicians within five miles of your home are doing to make the world more gorgeous. While you’re there, please consider donating a little something to the church’s music program. 😉

There are, of course, amazing concerts scheduled as well, including the SCHOLA CANTORUM REYKJAVIK, performing as part of the LA PHIL’s Icelandic-themed festival continuing through June 4. Learn more about this Sunday’s choral concert at “First Congo LA”.

On the secular front, here are a couple of quick links to consider — both happen to celebrate American music. Could we be on the cusp of a new American renaissance?

Saturday night 4/8, Pacific Chorale’s JOHN ALEXANDER SINGERS sings their founder’s swan song with the group, focusing on composers that the maestro has worked closely with over the years: included are Morten Lauridsen, Stephen Paulus, Frank Ticheli, Dale Warland, and Eric Whitacre, as well as the world premiere of The Untold Want by Christian Guebert, the OC composer who was the 2016 winner of the chorale’s Young Composers Competition. Tickets are very affordable for this historic event at Cal State Fullerton. More information

A new series ignites with “Concerts on the Corner” in Santa Monica, launching this Sunday 4/9 with mezzo GRETCHEN JOHNSON, pianist ARMEN GUZELIMIAN and a program of American songs. Songs made on our own soil is a particular specialty of Ms. Johnson’s, and this fine duo is one to watch. Click here

We are so lucky to be here. Have a beautiful week, and thank you for supporting live singing!
