Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
This is a very quick round-up this week, but do check out the following vocal happenings around town:
CENTER STAGE OPERA gets romantic just in time for Valentine’s Day. Catch charming duo BENJAMIN BUNSOLD and MELINDA EHRLICH as Roméo et Juliette in Gounod’s unforgettably beautiful Shakespearean tragedy. Check CSO’s website for details and tickets.
LA PHIL hosts opera’s own version of a phoenix rising, as acclaimed baritone SIMON KEENLYSIDE makes a rare appearance in LA. His triumphant return to the stage this season has been met with raves and wonder. Hear him, with mezzo CHRISTIANNE STOTIJN, cellist STEVEN ISSERLIS and conductor THOMAS ADÈS, leading a program of Sibelius, Saint-Saens, and two pieces of Adès’ own: the US premiere of Lieux Retrouvés and the West Coast Premiere of Totentanz for two singers and orchestra. Keenlyside as the Grim Reaper? That’s a must-see. Read more about the program and grab your tickets (quick!) by clicking here.
In the choral world, there are few names more “household” than JOHN RUTTER. The English master / maestro conducts the ‘Festival of Worship’ at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Sunday, in a mammoth choral festival that has become an annual tradition — more than 1000 singers are slated to perform. The huge sanctuary will be packed to the rafters with the event hosted by the FRED BOCK INSTITUTE FOR MUSIC AND WORSHIP, for a Rutter program that won’t soon be forgotten. With a crowd like this, however, plan ahead: the pre-concert dinner is already sold out, and tickets are available online for a donation you determine. But advance tickets are advisable, as is arriving way early: parking will be a challenge. Get details, photos and logistics
Think that’s it? Not a chance. Check out the calendar for more. Thank you for supporting live singing!
