Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

With so many event runs already in progress (see “Continuing” below), let’s look at a few newbies on the calendar this week:

In a week that boasts new planets and heady interplanetary wonderings, the LOS ANGELES ZIMRIYAH CHORALE couldn’t be more timely with their appearance at Santa Ana’s Discovery Science Center. On Saturday night, the mavens of Jewish music delve into “The Science of Music”, for an unusual take on the sounds that delight us.  Get info from LAZC

Also Saturday is the second concert is a short residency by the DIOTIMA QUARTET with JACARANDA, performing music by the three figureheads of the Second Viennese School: Schoenberg, Webern and Berg. Joined by soprano ELISSA JOHNSTON and mezzo ADRIANA MANFREDI, this concert will highlight some of the work that changed music in the 20th century, and continues to influence today. Get details

Look, too, for classics and romanticism from PASADENA PRO MUSICA, with a program of Handel, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven on Sunday afternoon. While the names are certainly familiar, the works are lesser-known, making this fifth annual Pasadena Schubertiade an exploratory exercise.  Click here

Finally, LA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA looks at Haydn’s years in the UK with two concerts of music by Lutoslawski, John Adams, Haydn and Rossini, all conducted by CARLOS KALMAR. Come early to “Haydn in London” for a pre-concert treat from selected AMERICAN YOUTH SYMPHONY musicians. Stay for baritone BRIAN MULLIGAN and Adams’ treatment of Walt Whitman, in The Wound-Dresser. They’ll all be at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on Saturday, and at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Sunday.  Learn more and make your plans
