Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

We’re surrounded, and it’s a beautiful thing. Make sure these are on your radar:

LONG BEACH OPERA continues their run of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, in a new adaptation by CULTURE CLASH and LBO’s truly fearless leader, ANDREAS MITISEK. This is a company premiere, with orchestral music from MUSICA ANGELICA. The original work is itself an adaptation, taken from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is the last weekend to catch the show, if you can: there are two performances on Saturday. Get your seats

The relatively new-to-the-neighborhood PASADENA OPERA launches it’s own take on Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte this weekend, bringing opera to A Noise Within, a space better known for very good theater. This production brings Wolfgang’s classic sex comedy to Haight-Ashbury and the birth of American counterculture in the 1960s, with a mashup that could be silly, or could be almost prescient. We’re betting on, and hoping for, the latter… (Keep an eye out for our review next week). Get info and tickets

There’s also LA OPERA’s ‘other’ Mozart favorite, presenting the show that was the composer’s breakout project: Abduction from the Seraglio has now been reimagined in the Roaring Twenties (which seems to one of LAO’s favorite eras), and reports are that the production is as luxe as one would wish for that decadent age. Six performances run through February 19. Click here

Finally, in the first appearance of this work in Los Angeles since the 1950s, LA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA brings Kurt Weill’s Lost in the Stars to Royce Hall for two evening performances on Saturday and Sunday. This was Weill’s final work for the stage, and while not so far into the distant past, it is rarely done in contemporary times. The collaboration between LACO and CAP UCLA is performed with SITI COMPANY, directed by ANNE BOGART, conducted by JEFFREY KAHANE, and features vocalists ISSACHAH SAVAGE, JUSTIN HOPKINS, LAUREN MICHELLE and MELONEY COLLINS. Be sure to show up early so you can take advantage of the ‘Art in Action’ pre-event activities. Get tickets and full details

Enjoy SoCal’s version of “brrrrr…”, be well, and THANK YOU for supporting live singing! Until next week…
