Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Christmas is just around the corner, and as this week’s issue of CCMN reaches into the first week of January, there’s a lot to cover. You won’t have any trouble finding gorgeous holiday fare to fill the gaps in your calendar, of course — just check the calendar and find something close by. There are concerts, evensongs, special events, sing-alongs, and just about any form of festive vocal exercise you can imagine. Here are a few things that are a little different this year:

Sat 12/17, NA LEO PILIMEHANA (pictured right) brings Hawaiian pop spirit to the Soka Performing Arts Center in Orange County. This vocal trio is an unusual choice for this column, but they’re also the world’s best-selling female Hawaiian group, and an out-of-the-box option that will broaden your horizons right through the middle of a spectacular Pacific sunset. The concert wraps up Soka’s year-long 15th anniversary festival, and Na Leo is joined by dancers and by Tahitian singer SABRINA LAUGHLIN to round out the tropical holiday fun. On 12/20, the contemporary series Tuesdays @ MonkSpace offers the combined program from brassy TRIO KOBAYASHI and C3LA (aka the Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles), one of the newest choral organizations in the area, with an already growing reputation for superb sound and daring rep. This concert of fresh, new holiday music and gorgeous seasonal brass is the perfect antidote to caroling overload. Get program details and tickets

Wed 12/21, don’t miss the encore screening of the landmark L’Amour de Loin from the METROPOLITAN OPERA, in movie theaters all over. This is the first opera to be produced at the Met by a woman in over a century, and they couldn’t have chosen a better composer than KAIJA SAARIAHO to break the streak. The opera already made waves when it premiered in Quebec last summer, and this run is also the Met debut of one of L.A.’s favorite conductors — the marvelous SUSANNA MALKKI. Grab your popcorn and see this modern milestone for yourself, but first, click here

After the new year starts, JOUYSSANCE EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE celebrates with their annual “Twelfth Night” concerts to round out the holiday season. On 1/7 and 1/8, ‘Frohe Weihnachten’ (Merry Christmas to those with kein Deutsch) brings German traditions to the wilds of California. (I can almost smell the Glühwein…) Grab your seats ahead of time

You can bet there’s plenty more on the calendar. Stay warm, fill your holiday with spirited tunes, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
