With December in full swing, the holidays are here with a vengeance. These events may not yet be on your radar this year, but are definitely worth a look:

The holidays are really for kids, regardless of the age that “kid” may be. So what could be better than music sung by an excellent children’s choir? This Sunday afternoon at 4pm, SOUTH BAY CHILDREN’S CHOIR sings about all things celestial with ‘Starshine’ at El Camino College in Torrance. Details and tickets

This Sunday evening and again 12/11, LOS ANGELES CHILDREN’S CHORUS sings their Winter Concert in Pasadena, with music by composers who have had a special impact on children’s classical music: Vivaldi, Host, Britten and Bach.  Read more

The classic family opera, ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’, gets an annual performance in Loma Linda on Saturday night 12/3, with RIVERSIDE LYRIC OPERA retelling the story of the Three Kings with Menotti’s beloved one-act treasure. Get your “thank you, thank you, thank you kindlies” ready, but first… click here

Not ready for Christmas yet (or ever)? Celebrate Leonard Bernstein, instead, with ‘Wonderful Town’ at LA OPERA, part of the lead-up to the composer’s centennial. This rarely-performed gem is closer to musical theater than opera, and tells of love, dating and two sisters in the big city. Three performances this weekend: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Get tickets

For a different, but still operatic experience, join SOUTH COAST SYMPHONY at Soka University in Orange County for arias, duets and trios from soprano/storyteller JACQUELYNNE FONTAINE, tenor NATHAN GRANNER and bass-baritone CEDRIC BERRY. The concert is Saturday night at 7:30, and details can be had by clicking here.

Wednesday night brings us a visit from esteemed out-of-town visitors: THE CHOIR OF TRINITY WALL STREET and TRINITY BAROQUE ORCHESTRA come to the Valley Performing Arts Center on Wednesday 12/7, led by director JULIAN WACHNER. They’re doing something called ‘Messiah’ — wonder what that could be?  Learn more and get tickets

This year, I hope you can all find a joy of your very own (and then share it with the rest of us). Regardless of ideology, background or circumstances, we can sing big and make this the best holiday season ever. As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
