Coril Prochnow’s Weekly Highlights
(Our guest columnist again this week!)

It was a treat to get a light rainfall in the Southland this week, but for some heavy-duty Purple Rain, take a trip to Chula Vista on Friday 10/21 at 7:30 pm, or to San Diego on Sunday, 10/23 at 6:30 pm. SACRA/PROFANA will “reinvent the choir” with a concert based entirely on Prince’s Purple Rain album, covering every track in a variety of arrangements. Ranked as one of the top albums from the last 25 years, the original recording is considered “culturally, historically or aesthetically important” and has been added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry. On Saturday afternoon, 10/22 at the First Friends Church in Whittier, CHORALE BEL CANTO presents “It’s the Water!“, a collection of music dealing with the mystique and majesty of water in oceans, rivers, lakes and… you guessed it, rain! Contributing composers include Monteverdi, Barber, Vaughan Williams and Whitacre, along with a selection of folk songs and spirituals. Conducted by Dr. STEPHEN GOTHOLD. Click here for more info

In the last week before Hallowe’en kicks off the end-of-the-year holiday stretch, you can still find a few groups presenting concerts in the spirit of the season. One of them is the SAN GABRIEL VALLEY CHORAL COMPANY, conducted by Dr. ZANAIDA ROBLES. This Saturday evening, 10/22 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Monrovia, SGVCC offers “Haunting Harmonies“, a Fall Festival Feast and Concert exploring the power of healing music that is “Humorous, Haunting and Harmonious”. Arrive two hours early (5:30 pm) to partake of the Festival Reception feast – the price of admission to the reception is not included with the concert ticket. Full details

Opening Saturday evening, 10/22 at the San Diego Civic Theatre, SAN DIEGO OPERA presents the beloved story of “Cinderella” as told by the 25-year-old Gioachino Rossini in one of his most popular compositions. Containing some of his finest writing for solo voice and ensembles, the show features LAUREN McNEESE as Cinderella, DAVID PORTILLO as Don Ramiro (Prince Charming) and JOSE ADAN PEREZ as Ramiro’s servant, Dandini. Conducted by GARY THOR WEDOW and directed by LINDY HUME, sung in Italian with English supertitles. Details and ticket info

Continuing

Thru 10/23, LA OPERA presents The Source, an opera about WikiLeaks and the release of classified documents about the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thru 10/23 — VENTURA COUNTY GILBERT & SULLIVAN REPERTOIRE COMPANY presents a Hallowe’en-themed classic, The Sorcerer

Thank you for supporting live singing!
