Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

With multiple season premieres this week, the season is definitely here. With or without red carpets and international star power, there are good things on our doorstep:

LA OPERA dives in with an epic vehicle for PLACIDO DOMINGO, bringing Verdi’s Macbeth to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. With the company’s superstar general director in the title role, joined by EKATERINA SEMENCHUK as his soon-to-be-mad Lady, and conducted by JAMES CONLON, this new production by Bway-rooted director DARKO TRESNJAK (remember his stunning Ghosts of Versailles?) will start the year off with a bang. Seven performances through October 16 — click here

PACIFIC OPERA PROJECT counts their season differently, so they’re already in full swing and then some. Their next venture is Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, the classic Faustian tale in very stylish modernity — it should be right up POP’s alley. (Watch for Adelaide Sinclair as Baba the Turk, one of the most fun, and certainly one of the hairiest, mezzo roles in the rep!) Get details

Kicking off their 12th season with a fairy tale, CENTER STAGE OPERA brings us Rossini’s La Cenerentola in Reseda, with just two performances this weekend. Click here  (Want more Cinderella? Watch for Rossini’s gem at San Diego Opera and Repertory Opera Company, both coming up soon!)

Southward, SAN DIEGO OPERA begins with a recital by Polish tenor PIOTR BECZALA on Saturday night. Learn more about this program and their coming season

Finally, a summer of masterclasses by conductor PETER MARK wraps up with Sunday’s panel discussion and a concert by some of the summer’s participants. The sold-out masterclass series is garnering high praise from those singing, and Sunday’s panel includes several local movers and shakers in the local opera community. Attend as an observer and hear up-and-coming talent, industry insight and enjoy an elegant reception. It all takes place at a private home in Beverly Hills. Get details and reserve your seat

Coming up, look for season premieres from LA CHORAL LAB and NOVA VOCAL ENSEMBLE, just for starters. For now, have a great week, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!

The List will return to our regular enews schedule with next week’s issue of Next 7, and there looks to be an exciting season ahead. Stay tuned, and thank you for supporting live singing!

*This post is echoed from the weekly vocal events column in the Clickable Chamber Music Newsletter, serving nearly seven thousand music fans all over Southern California. The original is a text-based email newsletter, so images, links and details may differ in this enhanced version.

The Clickable Chamber Music Newsletter and Next 7 are both on summer schedule, publishing every two weeks through August and early September.  You can view our schedule here.  This year, we’re on alternate weeks with CCMN, so we’ll publish a vocal column every week, in one or the other publication.  Of course, we’ll echo it here on the blog, too — easy peasy!
