Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Hello, fall! While we don’t have as many trees turning shades of flame in SoCal, this is still my favorite time of year, with all the excitement of new seasons — and this week, new music!
With Rosh Hashanah starting Sunday night, the calendar is a little light through next weekend. So this column will cover the next TWO weeks, and I’ll be back after the HHDs… In the meantime, catch as many of these as you can:
Saturday night 10/1, the LA PHIL re-ups their marvelous Green Umbrella series with four (count ‘em, 4!) world premieres, and five premieres total, in one spectacular evening. Composer JOHN ADAMS (pictured) conducts members of the Phil’s awe-inspiring New Music Group, with new commissions by Andrew Moses, Kate Soper (also singing soprano), Diaz de Leon, and Ingram Marshall, plus a US premiere by Colomina i Bosch. Learn more about all of these fascinating new works by checking out the calendar listing, complete with links to program notes — click here
The same evening, Red Hen Press presents soprano HILA PLITMANN and pianist TALI TADMOR at Boston Court in Pasadena, performing Mark Abel’s new LA-focused song cycle, The Palm Trees are Restless, combined with selections from David Del Tredici’s Miz Inez Sez and readings from the hen’s poets. This event may well sell out (if it hasn’t already), so click quick
On Friday 9/30, the LA CHILDREN’S CHORUS opens their season with ‘Bach to Broadway’, featuring a triple quartet of pros that’s packed to the gills with Listers (and therefore is bound to be awesome — yeah, we’re biased!). Check it out for yourself
For the contemplative, MUSIC AT ST BEDE’S is hosting an Evensong service in Mar Vista on Sunday afternoon, featuring flutist SUSAN GREENBERG and friends, including tenor ARNOLD LIVINGSTON GEIS, guitarist KENTON YOUNGSTROM, and pianist DELORES STEVENS. It’s a great way to get to know the Friends of Music program at this church (and consider joining!). Click here

Happy new year to those celebrating this week, and happy week to those celebrating all year. Have a musical life, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
