Celebrating our other independence

Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

With July 4th coming up fast, please bear with me while I take a moment to wax rhapsodic about independence.

What I truly love about being part of Jim’s marvelous endeavor here is the focus on local artists, chamber music… and a gentle leaning toward independent ensembles. These stalwart heroes of creativity and meaningful experience are the army that fights courageously for all kinds of music. They cross boundaries of genre and style. They bring us profound experiences. And they allow us to step out of daily life a bit, to dip into new venues, new works, and new ways of embracing the already familiar. I’d like to think that it would have made our founding fathers and mothers proud.

As my own project, unSUNg, starts its fourth season on Sunday 7/10, my bias is unabashed and clear – we created that series for these free thinkers. But don’t forget INDEPENDENT OPERA COMPANY, who offers Smetana’s The Bartered Bride on 7/8 & 9. It’s a charming tale of independent thought in matters of love, but also in matters of music, as the composer himself became one of the early pioneers in the development of Czech opera. Get details

Consider OPERA A LA CARTE part of these troops as well, as they may specialize in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan created more than a century ago, but their current program, ‘Hail Poetry‘, is testament to an ongoing effort to refresh, revamp, and relive. Six performances between July 8th and 17th take place at the beautiful Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo. Take a day and go to the beach, then wrap it up with some great music. But first, click here.

Happy 4th, everyone. Raise a sparkler this weekend to our independent artists, and thank you, always, for supporting live singing!

*This post is echoed from the weekly vocal events column in the Clickable Chamber Music Newsletter, serving nearly seven thousand music fans all over Southern California. The original is a text-based email newsletter, so images, links and details may differ in this enhanced version.

The Clickable Chamber Music Newsletter and Next 7 are both on summer schedule, publishing every two weeks through August and early September.  You can view our schedule here.  This year, we’re on alternate weeks with CCMN, so we’ll publish a vocal column every week, in one or the other publication.  Of course, we’ll echo it here on the blog, too — easy peasy!
