Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

With Memorial Day coming up, I’ll be covering the next two weeks in this column, and there’s plenty to keep you busy, entertained and maybe even a little more enlightened. (Yeah, good music can do that.) Prepare yourself, as even the smaller companies are going big in the second half of May.

This weekend, of course, is the more packed of the two, with lots of choral music, the continued run of LA OPERA’s La Bohème and the opening of Verdi’s epic Aida from REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY, with four performances May 21-June 4. This little company has built a reputation for strong dramatic presentation, which would be necessary for a smaller troupe to handle such a big work. With more than three hundred performances worldwide in medium-sized and large houses since 2009, this operatic stalwart has also become more and more popular with regional companies in recent years, proving that huge sets and live elephants are not necessary to tell this story. The LA PHIL combines two of choral music’s greatest composers this weekend, pairing Mozart’s Requiem and Pärt’s Miserere at Disney Hall. Talented soloists and combined choirs visiting from Estonia (Pärt’s homeland) and Latvia join GUSTAVO DUDAMEL and the orchestra for four performances through Sunday.  Read more

thornburgh_bunnyOne of our local landscape’s already legendary choral conductors gets feted by her longstanding ensemble, as CANTORI DOMINO offers a special tribute to founding director MAURITA PHILLIPS-THORNBURGH (“Bunny”) on Sunday afternoon, celebrating 26 years of music-making with Fauré’s Requiem, J.S. Bach’s Cantata 106 and more. Be part of ensemble history and learn how to get tickets by clicking here

Other big events include a program called “Russian Dreams” from the DREAM ORCHESTRA; a Mozart/Fauré mashup in Anaheim with MERITAGE VOCAL ARTS; and the ever-popular Carmina Burana with the SOUTHEAST SYMPHONY. Get the full story by checking out the calendar.

Have a great two weeks, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
