As the List is an arts advocacy organization focused primarily on professional music-making, it’s not often we feature college choirs. This is not due to bias, but to the sheer volume of choral music presented by colleges at any given time — there’s just no way to cover it all. But with impressive buzz coming in from last weekend’s grand collaboration on Brahms’ German Requiem, it’s a good time to introduce you to one of the gems of SoCal’s educational crown: Dr. Donna DiGrazia. With great musicality, exceedingly good taste in repertoire, a warm and generous spirit and truly exceptional chops and charisma as a musician, this woman has built an impressive choral machine on the Claremont campus, and the professional Listers appearing with them recently report high levels of artistry and precision, not only in the leadership but even with the non-major underclassmen who are part of one of the ensembles. The group performing next Thursday evening, the elite Pomona College Glee Club, once had a member from the Class of 1938 named Robert Shaw (yeah, that one) — just one example of a long and proud history of excellent music, and providing a solid foundation for students to build upon throughout their more musical lives. In the meantime, we also get to enjoy some gorgeous concerts. Either way, that’s what we love to hear!
