Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Choral music is in full bloom this time of year, with ensembles clicking well after a season’s months of rehearsals, and showing off their flashiest fare. Here are just a couple of examples of concerts to watch out for:

hamasyan_tigranOne of the most fascinating composers of music driven by a sense of multi-genre fusion, TIGRAN HAMASYAN is rather a superstar in the Armenian community, and Saturday’s concert at Royce Hall will give you a chance to learn why. ‘Luys i Luso’ draws from his native sacred music traditions across fifteen centuries, with elements of his work in classical, jazz, rock and more bringing ancient voices in the modern age. The concert features the YEREVAN CHAMBER CHOIR, and is the only performance of this program schedule in the U.S.  Quick, click here

What does California sound like? Our musical DNA established itself long before the Beach Boys, mariachi or any of the other styles most commonly associated with the Golden State. On 5/1 and 5/7, Orange County’s MEISTERSINGERS explore the music from our own backyard’s history, as ‘Heritage’ roams through the music of 18th- and 19th-century California missions. The composers of Spanish colonies were, of course, heavily influenced by the Baroque music being created in their European homeland, but such a distance was, like the culture evolving here, resulting in a unique microcosm that melded aesthetics from multiple perspectives. This repertoire is surprisingly rich and diverse, and this ambitious project has much to choose from. Catch one of their concerts in Rancho Santa Margarita or Huntington Beach, respectively, and wrap yourself in sounds that are very much ours.  Click here

Check the calendar for details on these, plus glorious repertoire from PASADENA MASTER CHORALE, BURBANK CHORALE and more.

If you haven’t heard the latest, research is now showing that singing in a choir improves life and health, makes you a better person, and can (no doubt!) change the world. If you’re not a singer yourself, find a group to listen to, and see what the marvelous fuss is all about. Give us a chance to thank you for supporting live singing!
