Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Have you ever fallen in love with a piece of music so hard that it changed you? This week (or any week) could be your chance. You never know when the Next Great Listen is around the corner…
This weekend celebrates both Valentine’s weekend and President’s Day, but love rules on the music front. SAN DIEGO OPERA opens their mainstage season with Tosca, LA MET and LA OPERA are offering their very different versions of Mozart’s Magic Flute, and the LA PHIL features a voice to fall for — that of soprano CAMILLA TILLING, who sings Dutilleux’s Correspondances, which premiered in Berlin last year.
Two choral concerts stand out, however, not only for their romantic themes but because these new ensembles are getting their own buzz:
ARTES VOCALES, led by DR. STEVEN KRONAUER and organized through the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, launched last year to considerable acclaim, and now offers ‘A Choral Valentine’ to SoCal audiences with two performances on Sat 2/13. Click here
Also, we have a brand-new group in town, as the debut concert from ARSENAL OF VOICES, led by YASUMICHI ICHIKAWA lands in the South Bay on Sunday afternoon. Entitled ‘Love Stands Still’, it could be an excellent opportunity for wooing a sweetheart, or for getting delightfully wistful on your own. Learn more
Watch for our tweets from today’s Magic Flute at LA Opera, and have a sweet and beautiful week. As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
Thru 3/6 — Peter Mark’s masterclasses continue in two locations each weekend, with a recital and arts panel wrapping up the run. To sign up as a performer or to just go and see the plethora of local talent, learn more — click here.
