Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Susannah, Carlisle Floyd’s now-classic American opera, is a thought-provoking tale of small towns, innocence and the darkness that can dwell anywhere. PASADENA OPERA will perform the show just twice at A Noise Within this weekend (Friday and Saturday), and it will likely sell out. While the company’s website states with understandable confidence that this show would be a good choice for opera newbies, bear in mind that the adult situations involved may not be right for everyone — read up before you pack up the kids. The cast includes CHELSEA BASLER in the title role, NICHOLAS BROWNLEE as the Rev. Olin Blitch, JAMES CALLON as Sam Polk and ROBERT NORMAN as Little Bat, and includes an impressive supporting cast, as well. Sung in English, with orchestra. Go if you can — click here
Saturday evening, 1/16, DREAM ORCHESTRA and the OPERA CHORUS OF LOS ANGELES perform Beethoven for charity, rocking the 9th Symphony in Santa Monica to mark MLK Day and raising funds for Samaritan’s Purse, a North Carolina-based and faith-based relief organization that provides help around the world. Tickets are just $5 as a suggested donation, but further donations would certainly be welcome. Click for details
Bringing social awareness through opera, OPERAWORKS continues their annual improv tradition, as their Winter Intensive training experience wraps up this weekend with two performances of ‘Arias in Motion’ on Saturday. If you’ve never experienced the thrill of improvised opera (where the basic story is prepared, but the performers craft their storytelling in the moment), take the opportunity and find your way to Northridge for either the 2pm or 7:30pm show. While the word “improv” sometimes strikes fear into the hearts of the cultured, rest assured that this is not vapid sketch comedy, although it is sometimes very funny. (We’ll just have to see.) If you can, see both shows — they’re unbound to be different! Learn more
