Vocal focus from CCMN*
Southern CA Vocal Events
Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
An important tip for finding wonderful vocal events? Don’t ignore the organizations that are usually more instrumentally-focused. Here are three events you might have missed, with splendid vocals presented by orchestral and chamber orgs:
Saturday evening, LOS ANGELES CHAMBER ORCHESTRA performs their own vocal-inclusive program of the season, with Bach’s Sleepers Awake cantata (BWV 140), is part of their “Discover” events that include lively conversation before the performance. Maestro JEFFREY KAHANE will walk the Ambassador Auditorium audience through Bach’s masterwork before the orchestra, the USC THORNTON CHAMBER SINGERS, the LOS ANGELES CHILDREN’S CHORUS and soloists KATHRYN MUELLER (soprano), COLIN AINSWORTH (tenor) and ANDREW CRAIG BROWN (bass) dive head-first into one of the most beloved of the master’s hundreds of pieces in the genre. Your discovery can start now, with an excellent blog post from Christine Gengaro on the LACO site.
Also Saturday night, SYNCHROMY collaborates with the visiting WILD RUMPUS with a concert entitled “The Only Place” in downtown LA. The varied program includes vocals from soprano VANESSA LANGER, including the premiere of a new piece by Synchromy exec director JASON BARABBA, who sent us the heads-up on what promises to be a spectacular concert. If you’re heading north this week, the program will also be performed in San Francisco on the 26th… Get details on the composer collective’s website.
Finally don’t let the all-caps “organ recital” description fool you: this Sunday’s LA PHIL-hosted concert by organist PAUL JACOBS at Disney Hall also prominently features soprano fabuloso CHRISTINE BREWER, with works by Bach, Reger, Gounod, Boulanger, and of course, the indelible Widor Toccata. Brewer’s fame rests primarily on her success in grand opera, but her skill in concert communication is unsurpassed, and the collaboration is sure to yield an unforgettable evening. Get details
For the more obviously vocal, don’t forget the opening of LONG BEACH OPERA’s Candide, with just three performances on 1/23 and 1/30. And as usual, there’s more on the calendar…
