Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

If you can believe it, this weekend has more vocal events than the last. We count more than 35 different choral programs offered over the next couple of weeks, filled to the brim with holiday cheer and musical favorites. (No excuse for not harboring some nostalgia this year!)

While the bulk of the annual Messiahs have passed, there’s still the combo with Bach’s glorious Magnificat from MERITAGE VOCAL ARTS ENSEMBLE on Sunday 12/13, marking the “passing of the baton” from director SHERIDAN BALL to their new leader, CRISTIAN GRASES.  Details and ticket info

Two more particularly notable Messiahs remain, starting with the sing-along with the LA MASTER CHORALE at Disney Hall (Tuesday 12/16), and an unusual chamber presentation from SALASTINA MUSIC SOCIETY (12/18 & 19). Watch the Singerpreneur blog next week for more information on the Salastina concept.

If you’re looking for something different, consider the ERWIN SCHROTT recital, ‘Cuba Amiga’, hosted by LA Opera on 12/12; or the rarely-heard offerings from SPACIOUS VISION on 12/20, creating an unusual set of ‘Songs for the Nativity’. There’s also the Kurt Weill retrospective from JULIA MIGENES that has been extended into January at the Odyssey Theatre in Westwood. Or perhaps the SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR is more your speed, performing a multi-genre holiday program at Disney Hall on Wed 12/23.

Of course, every church in the city will have something special going on for Christmas Eve, and possibly for Christmas morning as well. Check the websites for your local congregations to see what they have planned.

amahl_cropAfter Hannukah and Christmas and New Year’s have passed, REDLANDS OPERA THEATRE will present two family-minded performances of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, one of the season’s most beloved operas on 1/2 & 1/3. Tickets are available at the door — get details on their website

That’s the last you’ll hear from me (in this newsletter) until January, but it should be plenty to keep y’all busy. As for Lauri’s List, we’ll have two more issues of Next 7 in 2015, and we’ll keep you posted on the blog, of course.

Happy holidays, everyone, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
