Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Jumping right in this week…
A new season for BACH COLLEGIUM SAN DIEGO brings more than he of the curly wig, especially with their first program, entitled “Something About Mary”. Two blessed works celebrate the Virgin herself, starting with J.S. Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben and Purcell’s Celebrate This Festival. Quite a list of featured soloists includes soprano ANNE-MARIE DICCE and mezzo JANELLE DESTEFANO, and several more. Performed with orchestra, the two concerts are at two different San Diego locations on 10/16 and 17. For information and ticketing instructions, click here
If you’d like your weekend to be a little more “standard”, catch ‘An American in Pasadena’, presented by SOCIAL ARTS at the beautiful Blinn House on Oakland Ave. Affordable tickets, free parking and a cash bar can make for a very relaxing Saturday afternoon. Click here
Sunday afternoon, 10/18, OPERA BUFFS insist that “You Can’t Have Too Many Tenors!”, with four men of the high-voiced variety, plus a baritone and a soprano for good measure. (Sorry, mezzos.) The fall showcase offers staged scenes by Strauss, Rossini, Puccini, Cilea, Sondheim and more, all at Zipper Hall. Proceeds go to the charitable organization’s ongoing endeavors to support emerging artists with funding for airfare and the many expenses of setting up a career. Get details
Also this week are the annual ‘Men’s Invitational Evensong’ at St. Luke’s, Monrovia; and scenes of ’Shakespeare in Opera’ at Chapman University.
After the weekend…
- AMERICAN BOYCHOIR performs with LA CHILDREN’S CHORUS on Wednesday night;
- Met diva ISABEL BAYRAKDARIAN joins CAMERATA PACIFICA to shares her Armenian musical heritage at VPAC (Northridge) on Thursday night; and
- LA PHIL’s ‘Mozart and Haydn’ concerts start Thursday as well, including Haydn’s Mass in the Time of War with the LA MASTER CHORALE, a stellar line-up of soloists, and plenty of Schubert Lieder, to boot.
Check the calendar for details on all of these and more.
