Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

I’m out of town this week, and as beautiful as the Northwest is this time of year, more than a bit jealous of those who can attend some of the weekend’s gorgeous vocal events.  If I were home, here’s what I might be attending:

Russian music has a particularly lush, emotive quality that matches the grand sweeps of terrain and extreme weather experienced by the natives of  this huge and historic land.  The LA MASTER CHORALE opens their season this weekend with a program that tracks ‘The Russian Evolution’, exploring music development through a tumultuous century, from Tchaikovsky to a West Coast premiere from SOFIA GUBAIDULINA.  Featuring cello soloist ROBERT DEMAINE, you’ll hear choral music for ensembles large and small, in two performances on Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.  Learn more and get tickets

PASADENA MASTER CHORALE also starts their 2015-16 season on Saturday, with ‘High/Low’, a program that segregates the men and women of the chorus, but for musical purposes.  The concert will include work by composer-in-residence REENA ESMAIL, one of LA’s most fascinating young creators.  Two performances on Saturday and Sunday means you can see both of these beautiful programs for a choral-focused weekend that will turn me green with envy! Do spend a little time at ‘Operafest’ in Encino on Saturday, a fantastical family shindig hosted by local newbies ANGEL CITY OPERA.  There will be Pieology pizza, goodies, activities… and of course, singing!  Join in on the old-fashioned cake walk, and you may even win something luscious to take home. More details

Also catching the light on the Lister Calendar this week are two concerts as part of the wonderful MUSIC AT POMONA COLLEGE series:  a celebration of RUTH CRAWFORD SEEGER on Saturday, and a ‘Chamber Music Extravaganza’ on Sunday.  Details are on our calendar (linked below), but make sure you’re on their mailing list, as well.  Click here

Enjoy your week, and I’ll be back among you in October.  As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
