Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
There’s plenty of everything in the next couple of weeks, but opera reigns in the summertime:
OPERA NEO launches their summer festival and workshop in San Diego, offers two very different programs over the next two weekends, with four performances each: First, two favorites combine with Mozart’s charming singspiel The Impresario and a one-act presentation of Carmen, performed together on August 7 & 8. Then, Handel’s glorious Rinaldo runs August 14 & 15. For details, check the calendar or go to their website.
Not quite so far south, mezzo MILENA KITIC appears as Carmen as part of PACIFIC SYMPHONY’s summer festival at Irvine Meadows. The evening’s “Hot Latin Nights” is a program well-mixed and full of energy, with guest artists JT & FRIENDS and salsa king BOBBY RIVAS. Click here
Summer’s testosterone-fueled operatic tradition continues with the 5th Annual ‘Manly Men of Opera’ from REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY. The fun takes place on August 16 in Pomona, and has been a hit year after year. Click here
For a choral/orchestral/movie mash-up that is decidedly out of this world (it had to be said), the live presentation of the sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Hollywood Bowl on August 18. The film is plenty operatic in its own right, and will, of course, feature the LA MASTER CHORALE singing sections of Gyorgy Ligeti’s Requiem, the 20-part choral masterpiece that was made famous by the flick. We’ll keep adding more as details come in, so keep an eye on the calendar. And don’t forget to save the date for our final unSUNg concert of season — Sun 8/23, 6pm in Glendale. In the meantime, stay cool, and thank you for supporting live singing!
