Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Relishing the last days of the season, the next couple of weeks will trot out one great choral work after another.

Look for finales from INSPIRAVI, the METROPOLITAN MASTER CHORALE and the FESTIVAL SINGERS; a restrospective for HOLLYWOOD MASTER CHORALE; and Brahms’ Requiem from PASADENA MASTER CHORALE.  The renegade NOVA VOCAL ENSEMBLE celebrates (mostly) American composers at their Los Angeles concert on Sunday, including a world premiere by award-winning local composer DALE TRUMBORE.  In the Palisades, MUSIC AT SAINT MATTHEW’S finishes up the year with Rutter’s Gloria and the less-often programmed Te Deum for Empress Maria Theresa by Haydn.

Further south, the LA JOLLA SYMPHONY AND CHORUS combine Tchaikovsky, a 19-year-old violinist and Jonathan Dove’s Grand Cantata for a beautiful evening featuring soprano PRITI GANDHI and tenor EDWARD MOUT, as well as guest chorus the SAN DIEGO NORTH COAST SINGERS youth choir.

At the same time, summer festivals are starting up with

There is still opera to be had, however, with

  • LA OPERA’s Dog Days breaking new ground at REDCAT starting 6/11,
  • Verdi’s Aida coming to LA MET starting 6/6 and
  • Carmen visiting the Valley care of CENTER STAGE OPERA, also starting 6/6.

Thru 6/7 — ‘Hydrogen Jukebox’, LONG BEACH OPERA

Thru 6/28 — SONGFEST (click to check the complete schedule)

Congrats to all those wrapping up their season and looking forward to the next. Have a great week, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
