unSUNg is back!
We spend all year talking about performing arts all across the Southland, but summer is when “the List” switches hats and gets directly involved, with our own summer series and its own twists. As of this week, the third season of unSUNg: Songs Uncommon and New has arrived.
This Sunday marks one of our most diverse programs yet, with the West Coast premiere of new opera arias by Lori Laitman, songs in Japanese as well as the language of the Aztecs, and appearances by GuitAria and Red Car Trolley.
It’s just the first of three very unusual programs scheduled for
June 28, July 26 and August 23, all at 6pm.
Come to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glendale for a unique concert series focused on new and neglected music from the vocal chamber realm. It’s a collaborative endeavor designed to spark the imaginations of artists and audience alike, presenting a series of passion projects in each concert, with no two programs alike. Each concert is recorded for the use of the performers and presenters, creating an opportunity for musicians and composers to archive and promote their work and creating a concert experience with a casual vibe — it’s like being invited to a private, live recording session, where professional artists can share evocative repertoire and hang out at the reception following. (Be sure to bring your business cards, so you can flex your networking muscles!)
Our June artists include, clockwise from top left: Red Car Trolley (Rebecca Rasmussen, Norge Yip, Brian Dyer and Jennifer Appleberry); Lori Laitman, Natalie Mann and Victoria Kirsch; GuitAria (Peter Yates and Alexandra Grabarchuk); Vernon Snyder and Ursula Maria Kleinecke; and David Wilson, who will perform with Izumi Kashiwagi.
