Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Happy Mother’s Day!

Due to the fact that Sunday is reserved for mamas in the US, the concert schedule is a little lighter than usual — singers are moms, and have moms, too!  But look for these on the calendar, and find something special to do with you-know-who:

OPERA ON TAP is embracing the holiday by presenting “the mother of all bar concerts” in Hollywood, at the hip and cozy Room 5 Lounge on La Brea.  This group is part of the new revolution in classical music, offering performances in offbeat venues and with a casual, come-one-come-all (over 21) vibe.  Hear some great music, have a drink, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.  Shirley Temple, and her namesake "mocktail"Don’t drink?  Don’t let the bar stop you from enjoying the show: try a non-alcoholic specialty like Tonic & Bitters or get nostalgic with a Shirley Temple. It’s all about the music, after all.  Read more about the event, and be sure to get on their mailing list — click here.

Saturday night, the SAN FERNANDO VALLEY MASTER CHORALE AND ORCHESTRA sings a “bluegrass mass” by Carol Barnett, with a gala performance of The World Beloved in Reseda.  This unusual mashup is a classical work with creative bluegrass influences, and is a moving, joyful and distinctly memorable work.  Whether you like choral music, church music, bluegrass, or aren’t sure of any of it, this piece will have something for you. Heading south?

CHANTICLEER is in La Jolla this weekend; and
BACH COLLEGIUM SAN DIEGO performs ‘a tale of two cities’, with dramatic works by Carissimi and Charpentier, at two locations in SD.  Visit BCSD’s website

Kids’ stuff

Looking for a great kids’ choir to bring joy to your heart and a solution to the music ed gap for your children and/or grandchildren?  Four great choirs are performing in the next couple of weeks, and all have auditions coming soon.  NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CHORUS (Santa Monica) and LA CHILDREN’S CHORUS (Pasadena) both have concerts this weekend, and SOUTH BAY CHILDREN’S CHOIR (Torrance) sings of “Fiestas, Festivals and Songs of Celebration” on May 23 & 24.  The ALL AMERICAN BOYS CHOIR (Newport Beach) also offers a special outreach event on Saturday morning:  “KidSing 2015” is free, open to boys and girls in grades 3-6, and provides a chance for kids to try choral singing and have a whole lot of fun.  Check the calendar for details on all of these events, and the choirs’ websites for audition/registration info.

Coming soon

Ariadne auf Naxos gets a 20th-century twist (with mermaids!) from PACIFIC OPERA PROJECT, running May 14-23 in Highland Park.  Updated to the 1913 opening of POP’s venue, the Ebell Club, the cast includes many SoCal favorites, including soprano TRACY COX, who has been traveling the globe after her win at Operalia 2013.  Tables are selling out — but some tickets are still available, so grab yours asap! Even for a “light” week, that’s a lot to choose from (and of course, there’s more on the calendar…)  Pick your favorite, hug a mom, and thank you for supporting live singing!
