SOUTHERN CA VOCAL EVENTS
Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

Embracing the smaller scale

This week is heavy on Saturday performances (so put your clones to work), but also full of smaller, intimate concerts in many manifestations:

Appearing with SOUTHWEST CHAMBER MUSIC this weekend are tenor JON LEE KEENAN (fresh from a triumphant appearance as Bach’s Evangelist last weekend) and harpist ALISON BJORKEDAL, in a free community concert for all ages.  Get more info

Big-name opera star, still-intimate space:
World-traveling tenor VITTORIO GRIGÒLO comes to The Broad in Santa Monica on Wednesday, for a program heavy on composers from his Italian homeland. This is part of their ‘Up Close & Classical’ series that also brings us Ms. Bartoli next month…  To start with Signore Grigòlo’s concert info, click here

Saving the world (one project at a time) through their music, the artists of MUSIC FOR CHARITY EVENTS bring us art, poetry, song and more with this Saturday’s concert for Parkinson’s research.  It all takes place at the beautiful little sanctuary at St. George’s, La Cañada, and this all-in-one experience will sell out.  (Even if you can’t go, you can still donate!)  Learn more by clicking

Further south, the ‘Sundays at the Merc’ series in Temecula brings KRISTOF & KANE (aka Kristof Van Grysperre and Susan Mohini Kane, which is more of a mouthful) to the land of grapes and olives.  This series has been very successful at collecting high-quality performers and unusual programs, and this Sunday K&K will perform a new show, ‘Better Together’, exploring the wonders of all kinds of pairs.  Be sure to make time for wine and/or olive oil tasting while you’re there.  Temecula makes an excellent day trip!  For concert details, click here

Putting tech to work (and making it easier for you to enjoy the arts), the duo will reprise the show on 2/15 via Concert Window, an “online venue” that is worth a look on its own.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the big debut this week is LA OPERA’s Ghosts of Versailles, which opens on Saturday, and is part of the ongoing Figaro Unbound festival.  (We’ll be live-tweeting from the dress rehearsal tonight, so keep an eye on @laurislist on Twitter!)  Learn more and get tickets now

And Valentine’s Day is big this year, with heart-throbbing programs starting now.  Catch REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY’s ‘Serenades of Love’ on Saturday.  Get info
