Viva l’opera!
This week is overflowing with opera, and not the same old thing:
Starting Friday night, COPOLA (Chamber Opera Players of Los Angeles) turns an eye to murder with two free performances of a dark double bill, including Ned Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters and the world premiere of George N. Gianopoulos’ The Last Silent Voice, which was written for this troupe. Performers include soprano ARIEL PISTURINO, baritone E. SCOTT LEVIN and guest artists. We’ll be there — but don’t wait for the review. Get there Friday or Saturday night, at St. Mark’s in Glendale, so you can see these rare treasures for yourself! Click here
A duke, a jester and a girl as a boy… Friday and Sunday, SANTA BARBARA OPERA presents ‘Rigoletto’ in all its dramatic fervor, with the powerful EVAN BRUMMEL in the title role. Get details
Starting Saturday, REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY performs the first of four outings of Verdi’s magnificent Falstaff, at their home in Pomona, starring ARTHUR FREEMAN and PHIL MEYER as the big guy. Runs through Nov 22. Learn more
If you’re more in the mood for a concert atmosphere, the radiant SONDRA RADVANOVSKY brings a concert to the Music Center on Saturday night; ARETE celebrates American song on Sunday; and VOX FEMINA offers the free community program, ‘Music: A Mirror of Our Humanity’ at USC’s University Church on Sunday afternoon.
