SOUTHERN CA VOCAL EVENTS Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Starting with the start-up…
Fledgling opera company ORPHEE ARTS arrived on the scene earlier this year, and their first full production is here: Donizetti’s ever-popular L’Elisir d’amore is spreading the magic in Westwood, with two performances on Saturday and Sunday. Get details
LONG BEACH OPERA gears up for their new season with a Sunday ‘Coincidences” event, featuring composer TOBIAS PICKER and a conversation about the upcoming Thérése Raquin, which plays in the new year — 1/24 and 2/1. Tickets are only $15 for this preview event at the Colburn School, but students and current LBO subscribers can reserve free tix ahead of time, as long as they’re available. CENTER STAGE OPERA leans mainstream with ‘Pop Goes the Opera’ this Sunday, just as the choral season is full upon us, with a fall concert from THE FESTIVAL SINGERS in the OC and an intimate look at Handel’s Messiah from LOS ROBLES MASTER CHORALE in the West Valley. The LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE also scales things down this weekend, with 36 members of the ensemble performing ‘Renaissance, Reawakened’ on Sunday night.
Downtown on Saturday night, VOX FEMINA kicks looks at music and what it reflects, with ‘Music: A Mirror of Our Humanity’. With a new commission by DAVID O and a visual art piece created during the course of the concert by Ryman Arts’ KALEEKA BOND, this is an unusual presentation of collaborative arts that you won’t forget. Down in San Juan Capistrano, the MEISTERSINGERS OF ORANGE COUNTY present Missa Resurrexit, a reprise performance of a new work by Richard Cook and Katherine Cash. The choir joins the SOUTH COAST SYMPHONY, all led by BRIAN DEHN, for a lush one-time performance at the Mission Basilica. Click here
CONTINUING — Check the calendar for details:
Thru 11/15 — LA OPERA’s Dido/Bluebeard double bill is getting raves!
Thru 11/22 — OPERA NOVA resurfaces with Verdi’s lesser-known Attila in Santa Monica, starring PATRICK BLACKWELL in the title role.
Thru 11/22 — Falstaff comes to Pomona with REPERTORY OPERA COMPANY, melding three of Shakespeare’s plays into one Verdi comedy.
We’re always adding more to the calendar, so don’t miss a thing… Have a great week, and as always, thank you for supporting live singing!
[This post’s title is a reference to ‘Hymn to Intellectual Beauty’, an excellent poem with a terrible title, by Percy Bysshe Shelley: “There is a harmony in autumn, and a lustre in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!”]
