Look through and beyond the weekend for unusual programs and grand beginnings:
Emily Dickinson is one of the most-set American poets in art song, and a special program from pianist VICTORIA KIRSCH, soprano ANNE MARIE KETCHUM and actress LINDA KELSEY, blends songs, readings and scenery by BONITA HELMER to paint ‘This and My Heart: A portrait of Emily Dickinson’. Two performances remain — one on Sunday 10/19, as a benefit for the opera program at Pasadena City College, where Ketchum is long-time faculty; and another at USC on Wednesday 10/22, which, at last reports, was nearly sold-out. (But you never know…) They’re both on the calendar. Get details on the 10/19 performance
Sunday night, LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE launches their new season with ‘Voices of Light’, a unique presentation of choral music and film, featuring the once-lost 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, with a score by Richard Einhorn. We’ll be there — if you can’t make it, look for a debrief on the blog early next week.
Tuesday night, soprano URSULA MARIA KLEINECKE-BOYER and pianist VERNON SNYDER explore ‘Art Songs of Latin America’ at Cal Poly Pomona. Click here
Thursday night marks the start of PACIFIC SYMPHONY’s season, with ‘Cathedrals of Sound’, telling Respighi’s tales from stained glass, celebrating the sound of Segerstrom’s concert organ, and hearing chants sung by the NORBERTINE FATHERS. Concerts are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, 10/23 to 10/25. Get tickets and info
You can still catch ‘The Mikado’, one of the world’s favorite and most operatic shows by Gilbert & Sullivan, in Ventura County through Sunday 10/19.
There’s plenty more where these came from, particularly next week — take a look so you can plan ahead. As always, have a wonderful week, and thank you for supporting live singing!
