Happy Halloween!

This week has a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of music.  Let’s start with opera, as it’s coming out of SoCal’s ears:

The opera program at CSUN get a shot at the Great Hall at Valley Performing Arts Center, with a Day of the Dead-inspired ‘Carmen’.  Just three performances: Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  Do what you can to catch one of them, to support this program and their ability to perform in the big space.  Get details

GUILD OPERA continues their long tradition of educational programs with a Saturday morning performance of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, which is just right for family-friendly spookiness.  The 9am performance in Pasadena is free – Get more info

If you’d rather sleep in (a little), catch MET IN HD’s ‘Carmen’ **live** on Saturday morning, at theaters across the country).  Or, see the encore “non-live” (undead?) screening on Wednesday night. Click here

On the concert front, TESSERAE kicks off their new season with ‘Old Music in the New World’ on Saturday and Sunday; ARTEMUSICA brings Mozart’s Requiem to Santa Monica Saturday night; PACIFIC CHORALE spotlights ‘Pipes’ in all their glory on Sunday, with music for voice, brass and organ; and on Thursday, the PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC CHOIR comes to Orange County for a concert at the beautiful hall on Soka University’s campus.

As Sunday is All Souls’ Day, special services and concerts abound, as well:  three choirs, soloists and orchestra combine for ‘Eternal Light’ at St. Mel’s in Woodland Hills, featuring John Rutter’s beloved Requiem, plus music by Mozart and Beethoven.  Click here

Finally, the annual Evening Prayer and Concert to mark All Souls’ takes place again at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, where thousands will gather to hear the CATHEDRAL CHOIR and organist SAMUEL SORIA perform Durufle’s Requiem, one of our modern masterpieces.
