SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VOCAL EVENTS
Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights

In a way, Die Fledermaus is all about second chances, so LA MET’s encore run at Strauss’ classic operetta, with a Salsa twist, is right on target.  Their annual performance at the end of December was interrupted by a major power outage, so the shows Friday and Saturday will, shall we say, shed more light on the subject.  (Couldn’t resist.)  Discounts are available for advance tickets, and details can be had by clicking here.

On the concert front, ARTEMUSICA steps into the Baroque with two of the era’s greatest choral masterpieces:  Vivaldi’s Gloria and Handel’s Dixit Dominus.  Reports have been glowing about this relatively new addition to the LA music scene, and Friday’s concert promises to be a lush combination of two glorious works.  The concert is free, but donations to support this growing organization are appreciated.  For information, click here

On Sunday afternoon, PASADENA PRO MUSICA sings music of Renaissance master Orlando di Lasso, the genius of many names who delighted many of Europe’s heads of state and continues to transfix audiences today.  PPM and their director, STEPHEN GRIMM started a series of di Lasso concerts last year, to considerable acclaim, and this “Lassopalooza” concert (Grimm’s term, with tongue firmly in cheek) is a continuation of that ongoing journey.  Presenting three of the composer’s works and experimenting with physical configurations, the program is a true exploration of a subject that is clearly very close to the ensemble’s collective heart.  Get more info now

Now that the pancake-filled Mardi Gras celebrations are over, look for a bevy of beautiful Lenten events over the next 39 days: the run-up to Easter always includes many special events filled with gorgeous seasonal music, inspiring for the faithful and lovely for all to hear.  This week, for instance, there are Evensongs at St. James in the City (Mid-Wilshire) and at St. Bede’s (Mar Vista), plus an unusual event next Thursday at St. George’s in La Cañada that includes chants by tenor DANIEL CHANEY and a variety of other special features.  Check the calendar at LaurisList.com or on the Episcopal News website for details on these and many other choice offerings.

As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
