Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Wringing hat in hands with anticipation and perplexed decision-making? With such a full schedule this week, we all are, my friends, and as time is very short today, here’s a quick rundown:
Concerts
Mary Shelley’s classic tale gets new life in the new and original oratorio, ‘Frankenstein: Of Monsters and Men‘, the result of a joint project between the LA MASTER CHORALE and the students at Ramon C. Cortines High School. Two performances: Thursday noon and Friday evening, with free admission. Click here for details
Also, check out Broadway favorites from CENTER STAGE OPERA; a concert by the WELSH CHOIR OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA in Redlands; the delightfully titled (and equally promising) ‘4 Hands, 4 Feet and a Diva‘ at All Saints, Pasadena; and the return of Gale Oliver’s OPERA CAFE in Westwood. More details on all of these are on the Lister Calendar.
Sacred Salve
Sunday includes both a Choral Evensong at Messiah, Santa Ana and the restful and contemplative experience that is Compline at St. James in the City. Check the calendar for all the info.
Operas galore
While you’re there, hang onto your horned hats! ‘Cosi fan tutte‘ starts at PEPPERDINE OPERA; Handel’s exquisite ‘Acis and Galatea‘ gets three performances (in locations near you) from MUSICA ANGELICA; and the PACIFIC SYMPHONY makes sure the OC gets their operatic fix with the ever-popular ‘La Traviata‘. With ‘Elixir of Love‘ in San Diego, ‘Don Giovanni‘ at UCLA and a passel of strapping shipmates at LA OPERA for Britten’s ‘Billy Budd‘, it’s a very grand era indeed.
Speaking of which, be sure to check @laurislist at Twitter.com for tweets from the ‘Billy Budd’ dress rehearsal on Wednesday (#LAOBillyBudd) — this iconic production brings Herman Melville’s gripping story to life, and we can’t wait!
As always, thank you for supporting live singing!
