SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VOCAL EVENTS
Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s Weekly Highlights
Bring in the new and different! There are fewer concerts this weekend (probably a result of the national obsession with the Super Bowl — who are you rooting for?), but the options are plenty unique this week:
Friday evening marks the first event in a new vocal recital series, BELLEZZA DELLA VOCE, with selections from soprano CHRISTA STEVENS, mezzo MEGAN GILLESPIE and pianist GIDEON RUBIN, performing in Hermosa Beach. With a serious decline of vocal recitals in Southern California, it’s exciting to see a series like this grab the torch. Get info about this first event.
Continuing runs of two very different operas, Duke Ellington’s ‘Queenie Pie‘ (the jazz master’s only opera) in Long Beach and the iconic ‘Pagliacci’ in San Diego, show two very different sides of the stage coin. But you can get a more intimate taste of opera as PACIFIC OPERA PROJECT returns to Santa Monica Saturday night, as part of ‘Fireside at the Miles‘, a lounge-y series that presents a wide variety of artsy entertainments at a teeny ticket price. For those less than intrigued by the big game, Sunday afternoon continues the ‘Brilliant Strings‘ guitar series with a program that features the unique TARA ROSE DAVISON, who sings selections from opera and art song while accompanying herself on classical guitar. With serious chops on both instruments, she appears with several others in a varied program that is well worth catching. Get details by clicking here.
The week isn’t over yet, as Wednesday night holds two programs that will lure you out to see the stars: The father-son pair of JEFFREY KAHANE (director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra) and GABRIEL KAHANE (best known for his clever Craigslistlieder) perform together at the Laguna Beach Music Festival, blending their individual styles and familial charisma in “a ‘mix-tape’ style offering of old and new musical encounters”. Finally, the sensational PHILIPPE JAROUSSKY comes to Disney Hall with the VENICE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA (think canals, not beach), for a rare LA appearance. Jaroussky has been hailed by The Guardian as “the poster boy of French countertenors”, and has built an international following by “reviving the lost art of the castrato” (NY Times). He will also sign CDs at the LA Phil store after the concert. Click here to get info and tickets now.
Stay healthy, live music, and thank you for supporting live singing!
