CCMN: Long road into Christmas

Vocal focus from CCMN*

Lauri D. Goldenhersh’s
Weekly Highlights

Since this issue of CCMN covers the bulk of December [this issue covers to 1/6/14] , I’d like to point out just a few goodies, and refer you back to the calendar for the multitude of options that await.  This is a very, very big month, and we’re so lucky to have a musical landscape like this!

DA CAMERA SOCIETY has crafted the perfect combination for the holidays:  soprano ELLIN HARGIS, seasonal music from the Baroque period, an exquisite ensemble featuring CARLA MOORE on violin, JOHN DORNENBURG on viola de gamba and JILLON STOPPELS DUPREE on harpsichord… and Doheny Mansion, one of the architectural gems of old Los Angeles.  This concert takes place this Sunday, December 8 – get tickets pronto.  To learn more, click here.

Holiday concerts and other programs abound, of course, as almost every choral, chamber and orchestral organization in town is doing something festive to celebration their holiday spirit.  Opera continues throughout the month as well, with the gobsmackingly good ‘Magic Flute’ at LA OPERA continues through 12/15, creating a bigger buzz than we’ve heard in a while.  Creating their own New Year’s tradition (in the spirit of the Viennese), LA MET is again presenting Strauss’ delightful ‘Die Fledermaus’ on 12/29, with a salsa twist.  The extravaganza takes place at Mariasol Restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier, and the ticket price includes dinner.  For more info, click here.

Call Hollywood’s M Bar right now and make your reservations for ‘Ella Fitzgeraldberg’ on Dec 14 — this event will sell out.  The brainchild of pianist/coach TALI TADMOR, this unique project explores the vivacity and joy of 1940s Yiddish swing music.  (Yes, you read that right.)  This very special event will feature the vocal talents of Lister sopranos SHELLY FOX and AYANA HAVIV, singing Tadmor’s new arrangements of old songs from the period.  With a hot big band, dancing and holiday libations, this is a one-night-only preview event for a planned theatrical show, and promises to be a fascinating and very memorable evening.  (Full disclosure: I’ve provided some PR consulting on this project.  But don’t let that stop you from joining the fun!)  For more details about this event and the project in general, click

Keep an eye on our calendar as we get closer to Christmas, too — we’re still getting notices for special services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, plus more concerts full of exhilaration and sentiment than you can sneeze at.  Of course, Lauri’s List will continue publication of Next 7 for  the next couple of weeks, before we go on our own holiday break.  Make sure you’re on our mailing list, or use the link below to check out the latest issue.

Whatever you do this year, have a wonderful holiday season, a happy new year, and many thanks for supporting living singing in 2013!
