Gone with the Wind is arguably one of the most operatic films ever made. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that when Josh Shaw and Stephen Karr of Pacific Opera Project starting planning their new production of ‘Cosi fan tutte‘, thoughts drifted rather naturally toward the celebrated Civil War epic for inspiration — the similarities go well beyond big skirts. With two equally fine casts of both local and imported singers, the action may lean a bit toward classic melodrama, but retools Mozart’s beloved farce with originality and visual punch.
The company is making the most of the movie tie-in, too: audiences can enjoy onscreen movie trivia as they wait for the show to start as well as a trailer of POP’s next big project, currently in pre-production: look for ‘Sweeney Todd‘ next season. The epic aesthetic also makes the most of their new digs: the Porticoes Theatre is the impressive, newly-renovated appendage of St. James United Methodist Church, and prepped to become a new cultural center for a variety of arts orgs, not far north of the 210.
