What’s Next? started as an upstart project in 2008, founded by two USC grads. But in just a few years, this group has gained ground, developed strong relationships across town and beyond genre boundaries, and they’re presenting some of the most intriguing musical events in town. This one is no exception.
One opera, by Michael Gordon, explores the mind and heart of iconic artist Vincent Van Gogh, using composer’s rock-influenced style to illuminate a legendary life with an edge. The other, composed by Shaun Naidoo, sets those ubiquitous scam emails for percussion and electronics. Both pieces express cutting-edge vision and rework the operatic genre to serve the artists’ shared modern aesthetic. Can’t wait to hear the results.
